The Perfect Chip and Run
How to Execute the Perfect Chip and Run
Depending on the lie of the ground there is between you and the hole depends on the type of club and swing method you will use for your chip and run. Each method has its own benefits and can and will achieve impressive results.
Make the Right Decision
Being able to assess the situation and make the right decision is vital when trying to perform a chip and run shot. A lot of the time it will make the most sense to get the ball rolling as soon as possible because of the short distances. Your decision making process will very much depend on the lie of the land and the amount of rough that you have to get through before the green. When there is longer grass, the play is done best with a long iron, pull the ball back in your stance, and move your hands forward, your weight should be on the left side and you should adopt your normal hand grip that you would use on a iron shot.
Belly Wedge
This is the best shot to use when you are at the edge of the green. Just line up the shot and ensure that the club is hovering half way up the ball, keeping your wrists very firm. Just pull the swing back a little further than usual to ensure that there is no deceleration.
Low and Running
This particular chip is very useful for when you have no obstacles in front of you, such as rough, and when you want to get the ball running immediately. To achieve this shot, it is always best to use an iron and have your hands high up the grip, swing at the ball exactly like you would do with a putter. This method will ensure that the you can strike the ball as low and centrally as possible.
The Utility Club
This club is idea for when you are slightly further away from the hole. It is recommended that when doing this shot, use the wedge like you would use a putter and make your follow through slightly longer so that you will commit to the shot.
